B.Sc. Nautical Science is a full-fledged, 3-year undergraduation course, while DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) is a short-term diploma course of 18 months of pre-sea training that requires sponsorship as well.
To join a DNS course, you have to pass the IMUCET exam along with getting sponsorship from a shipping company.
DNS Sponsorship means that the company is assuring the cadet of this 18 months of sea service onboard one of its ships.

Based on the IMUCET rank, a student can apply for DNS sponsorship twice: once in the August batch and again in February (for some companies).
After clearing all written exams and interviews, candidates are required to go through a psychometric test and a medical test conducted by DG Shipping-certified doctors.
After completing the DNS course, you need to appear for second-mate exams. This second-mate exam is calculated as the 6th semester. After completing the second-mate exam, you will get a COC certificate. You need to send this COC certificate and some other documents to IMU by mail to get the B.Sc. in Nautical Science degree certificate.
